Building a meta deck: what it actually costs, and where to buy the cards

Where the money actually goes in a sixty-card deck

Not where the shine is. The bill of a competitive deck concentrates in a handful of cards: the ex Pokémon that every list plays, and sometimes one ACE SPEC card. Everything else — the Supporters, the Items, the basic Energy — costs little or nothing, and much of it you may already own.

This is why two decks with the same number of cards can differ enormously in price. A deck whose core carries four ex Pokémon has four expensive slots multiplied by however many copies the lists play. A deck with none has a bill made almost entirely of Trainers, and Trainers are the cheapest cards in the game.

It is also why the honest buying order never changes: core Trainers first, because they are cheap and they will serve in your next deck too. Then the cheap Pokémon of the core. The expensive ex cards last, once you have borrowed or proxied the deck at league long enough to know you enjoy piloting it.

Keep one distinction in mind while you read the table below. "Different cards" counts what you need to own at least once; "core copies" counts how many of the sixty slots the core fills. The gap between them is the part of the deck players disagree about, and each deck's own page counts that part card by card.

Every deck we count, with its core priced when we can do it honestly

97 decks, counted off 2,749 tournament lists read between 9 August 2026 and 5 September 2026. The order is the one our decks index uses: the most played first. Prices are 7-day sales averages from Cardmarket, read on 5 September 2026, in euros.

A total only appears when EVERY card of a deck's core has its own price reading. One missing card and the cell stays empty, however close the sum was, because a partial total that looks complete is an invented number wearing a suit.

The euros are not a mistake. Cardmarket is where European players buy and sell their cards between themselves, and it is the marketplace whose daily price file we read. If you buy in dollars, treat the figure as a scale, not a quote: the dollar price of the same core lives on TCGplayer, one search away.

And do not read the price as a ranking of what deck is "best". The order of this table is how much each deck is played, full stop. An expensive deck is not a better deck; some of the strongest lists of the past were cheap, and some very expensive piles have lost every game they sat down for.

How that price column is built, choice by choice

A price is a set of choices, and hiding them is how numbers lie. So here are ours, all of them, in plain words. If any of these choices would change your decision, now you know to check the marketplace yourself before paying.

Which card, exactly: the precise printing the tournament lists cite most often — same set code, same collector number, the one printed in the corner of the card. Two printings of the same card can have very different prices, and we never substitute one for the other.

Which number, exactly: the average sale price over the last seven days, as published in Cardmarket's own daily file. Not the cheapest listing, not the most hopeful one — the average of what the card actually sold for. Multiplied, for the total, by the number of copies the lists most often play.

And how fresh: every reading carries its date, and a reading older than seven days is not shown at all. Prices move every day. Whatever figure you read here, check it on the marketplace before you spend — the point of this page is scale, and the till is where the real number lives.

Where players actually buy the cards

Singles — cards bought one by one — are how tournament players build decks. In the United States that marketplace is TCGplayer; in Europe it is Cardmarket, where the prices on this page come from. The link below is a shop link, and it is labelled as what it is.

Walk in with a list, not a mood. Each deck page on this site counts the exact cards its deck needs, printing included. Search the card, check the collector number against the one the lists cite, and you will never pay for the wrong version of the right card.

And remember the buying order one last time, because it is the single cheapest piece of advice in the game: Trainers first, expensive Pokémon last, and only after the deck has earned its place in your hands.

The expiry date nobody prints on the bill

Once a year, the oldest regulation letter still legal leaves tournament play. Right now that letter is H. The rotation column above counts, for each deck, how many core cards carry it — how much of the bill has a countdown attached.

Nobody at the till will mention this, and it changes the real cost of a deck more than any discount. A deck that keeps its whole core through rotation is a deck you buy once. A deck losing a third of its core is a deck with a second bill already in the post — we do not know rotation's exact date, the publisher announces it, but we know exactly which cards go.

How much does a competitive Pokémon TCG deck cost?

There is no single number, so we count it deck by deck: the table above totals each deck's core — the cards every tournament list of it plays — off Cardmarket's 7-day sales averages, read on 5 September 2026, in euros. A total only appears when every core card has a reading. The short version of what drives it: the ex Pokémon carry the bill, the Trainers barely register.

What is the best Pokémon TCG deck to build?

The one you will enjoy piloting for months, and only you know that. What we can tell you is what people actually play: the table above lists every deck with enough tournament lists behind it, most played first, and each name links to a full page counting its cards. Borrow a deck at league before you buy it. A deck you love losing with beats a deck you resent winning with.

Why are the prices in euros?

Because they are real. Our readings come from Cardmarket, the marketplace where European players trade cards between themselves, and it trades in euros. We would rather give you a true figure in a foreign currency than a converted one dressed up as local: use it for scale, and check TCGplayer for the dollar price of the same cards.

Do I have to buy the whole deck at once?

No, and you should not. Buy the core Trainers first — cheap, and they serve in every deck you will ever build. Play with borrowed or stand-in copies of the big cards at league until you are sure the deck suits you. Buy the ex Pokémon last. Spread like that, even an expensive deck becomes a series of small, safe buys.

Will my deck still be legal next season?
