Its Ability

Emperor Aura

Once during your turn (before your attack), when you play Empoleon from your hand to evolve 1 of your Active Pokémon, you may use this power. Your opponent can't attach any Energy cards from his or her hand to his or her Pokémon during your opponent's next turn.

Its attacks

Steel Wing

40

During your opponent's next turn, any damage done to Empoleon by attacks is reduced by 20 (after applying Weakness and Resistance).

Whirlpool

60

Flip a coin. If heads, discard an Energy card attached to the Defending Pokémon.

What to make of it

Have a look at what it does well, then at what will get in your way. After that you'll know whether it belongs in your deck.

  1. A strength

It has an Ability, Emperor Aura. An Ability costs you no attack, so you can use it and still swing the same turn.

  2. Keep in mind

None of the 5,828 tournament lists we have read runs it. That does not make it a bad card — it means we have not seen it on a table yet.

  3. Keep in mind

It is a Stage 2. You have to come through Prinplup to get here, or find a Rare Candy to skip the middle step.

  4. Keep in mind

Weakness Lightning +30. Against a Lightning Pokémon, apply that to the damage it takes — it climbs fast. Of the 5,828 tournament lists we have read, 476 run at least one Pokémon of that type.

Who plays it

None of the tournament lists we have read mentions this card. That happens with a card that has just come out, or one players have not tried yet.

Two cards of the same Pokémon can be worth wildly different amounts — it depends on the set, the rarity and the artwork. We put all 22 Empoleon cards on one page, priciest first.
