Charizard ex has appeared in several sets: Obsidian Flames (OBF 125) and Paldean Fates (PAF 54). It is the same card every time — it plays the same, only the artwork and the price change. Here is what it does once it is on the table.

Its Ability

Infernal Reign

When you play this Pokémon from your hand to evolve 1 of your Pokémon during your turn, you may search your deck for up to 3 Basic Energy cards and attach them to your Pokémon in any way you like. Then, shuffle your deck.

Its attacks

Burning Darkness

180+

This attack does 30 more damage for each Prize card your opponent has taken.

What to make of it

Have a look at what it does well, then at what will get in your way. After that you'll know whether it belongs in your deck.

A strength
330 HP, and nothing in Paldean Fates goes higher. That is the wall your opponent has to break through before taking a Prize.
A strength
It has an Ability, Infernal Reign. An Ability costs you no attack, so you can use it and still swing the same turn.
Keep in mind
None of the 8,065 tournament lists we have read runs it. That does not make it a bad card — it means we have not seen it on a table yet.
Keep in mind
It is an ex card. The turn it goes down your opponent takes 2 Prizes instead of one, and games do turn on exactly that.
Keep in mind
It is a Stage 2. You have to come through Charmeleon to get here, or find a Rare Candy to skip the middle step.
Keep in mind
Weakness Grass ×2. Against a Grass Pokémon, apply that to the damage it takes — it climbs fast. Of the 8,065 tournament lists we have read, 5,066 run at least one Pokémon of that type.
Keep in mind
Mark G. It is not among the marks currently accepted in Standard: H, I, and J. A legal reprint may still provide an exception.
